Silverwoods Spring Fine Art Sales

Last sale was on Thursday 17th April 2008

An early piece of English delftware was sold to a Midlands dealer for £14,500 plus Premium despite being wrongly catalogued and bearing only a £50 estimate. The cistern which is pictured above is thought to be a rare London piece dating from about 1570. The piece which is oval and measures 30 cms stands lopsidedly on 3 bun feet and has a corrugated rim around the top edge. It is handpainted with naive Chinese scenes and although it has been quite badly chipped to the striking blue glaze and has lost one of the carrying handles, 4 bidders turned up to contest it to its final auction price.
