Buying and selling at auction: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How can I sell my items at auction?
A: Simply follow these easy steps
- Wrap up all valuable and or breakables so they cannot be damaged in transit
- Call in at Silverwoods Building any Monday 9am - 12 noon
- Drive in to the big hall in the Silverwoods Building
- Unwrap all your items and place on tables provided
- Once your items are unwrapped, a member of staff willcome and look at them and advise on the best sale in which to place them and also on auction prices. If you are happy with this advice and wish to place your items for sale you will be given an itemised receipt.
- Alternatively if you are happy to complete your own form, fill in the descriptions of the items on the form with your reserves. (if you are unsure of the description or how much reserve to put please ask a member of staff who will advise accordingly)
- Leave your items with Silverwoods
- A cheque for your sold items will be sent 7 – 10 days following the sale
- If your item didn’t meet the reserve you will be contacted to arrange collection
Q: What if I cannot come on Monday?
A: If you are unable to attend the intake and valuation day either due to your location, Quantity of items or other circumstances, please call Wilf Mould on 01200 423322 who will be happy to discuss other possibilities.
Q: How much will it cost?
A: We charge 15% on all items sold +Vat (vat only on the 15% no vat on your total items unless otherwise stated) + 1% Insurance. There is a minimum charge of £3 per lot for items in the Antiques Sales and £1 per lot for items in the Wednesday general sales. Simply it works out at approx 15% or £15 per £100
Q: What if my items are unsold?
A: We will contact you the day after the sale and discuss the options with you. Company policy states that we generally will not re enter unsold items in the next sale unless agreed with the auctioneer. There is an unsold fee of £3.00 per lot
Q: How do I buy from Auction
A: Simply follow these easy steps
- Firstly you must register with us. We will then issue you a Bidders number which is valid until the end of this year (there is an admin fee of £2).
- You then look around the auction room on one of the viewing days. making a note of any item you want to bid on. we also surgest making a note of your limit for the item (top of page)
- When the item you wish to bid on is announced raise your bidders card or catalogue to tell the auctioneer you are bidding. if you are outbid and wish to place a higher bid, again indicate to the auctioneer that you are bidding. Pleas note that there is a 12.5% Buyers Premium charged on each lot
- If you have succesfully purchased any lots and you decide to go, please settle your account in the office, you will be given a receipt
- You hand this receipt to a porter at the packing area who will collect your items from the saleroom for you
- use packaging provided to ensure your items are safe and secure
Q: What if I cannot attend the auction
A: If you are unable to attend the auction simply pick up a bidding slip or ask a member of staff for one during viewing . Fill this slip in with your maximum bid and hand to a member of staff. If you are successful with a bid a member of staff will contact you after the sale to arrange a collection time.
Q: What if I can't attend the viewing and the auction?
Top of pageA: We always urge people to try to view the items so they are happy with what they are bidding for. If you are unable to attend the viewing and the auction, call a member of staff who will be happy to describe the item and answer any questions regarding the item. We can then fill in a bidding slip for you and the auctioneer will bid on your behalf, we will then notify you if you are sucessful within an hour of the completion of the sale.
Q: Can I bid over the phone
A: Yes we will accept phone bids on any item over £80. We will contact you approx 5 lots prior to the item you are interested in.
Q: I live a distance away, and wouldn't be able to collect the item?
A: If you are the succesful purchaser of any lots we can arrange transport or posting of the item. This service is at your cost. Please contact us before the day of sale to give more information.
Q: How can I pay?
A: We accept cash, cheque with bankers card large amounts will have to be arranged before bidding. Credit & debit cards. We can take payments over the phone or by post (please do not send cash through the post)
